Episode 5 Recap: Limited Edition Wine Release Challenge

The Challenge Unveiled

In the latest episode of Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars, culinary icon Gordon Ramsay and reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump upped the ante by challenging their teams to create a limited edition wine release for their respective wine brands. Each team was tasked with shooting a 30-second commercial to introduce their new limited edition wine to enthusiasts, with the added twist of picking a holiday for the release. Team Ramsay chose New Year's Eve, while Team Vanderpump opted for Valentine's Day.

Team Dynamics and Roles

As in previous challenges, the teams were split into sub teams: the label team and the commercial team. For Team Ramsay, Andrew, Chuan, and Kyson took charge of label creation, while Liz, Ali, and Rose were responsible for the commercial. Team Vanderpump selected Jess and Erica for their label sub team, and Nicolas, Maria, and Roman for their commercial sub team.

Leadership Challenges

Reflecting on her unexpected leadership role, Liz shared, "I wasn't planning on leading this challenge, but no one else on the team seemed particularly excited to lead. In my mind, a good leader steps up to the plate even when it is difficult." With just 24 hours to create and present their new limited edition wine and commercial to wine enthusiasts in London, the pressure was on.

Naming and Theming the Wines

Team Ramsay named their new wine "Rebrand," playing on the themes of self-reflection and making memories to ring in the New Year. Team Vanderpump, on the other hand, went with "Love Affair," aiming for a cheeky take on their Valentine's Day theme.

Presentation Day

On the day of the challenge, both teams presented their wine and commercial to a group of wine enthusiasts. Team Ramsay stumbled during their presentation, failing to clearly connect the name "Rebrand" with their commercial's message. In contrast, Team Vanderpump delivered a seamless presentation that even elicited laughter from the crowd.

Judgment and Elimination

After deliberation, the guests voted Team Vanderpump as the challenge winners, sending Team Ramsay into this week's grilling. Reflecting on the outcome, Liz admitted, "Going into this grilling, I was terrified. This was my first challenge I led, and I thought I would be on the chopping block because I didn't lead our team to victory."

During the grilling, Gordon Ramsay expressed his disappointment with the label creation and the disconnect between the commercial and the label. He was particularly displeased with his own wine brand being called "Rebrand," feeling it implied that his initial launch was unsuccessful, which was far from the truth. Due to the lack of direction in the presentation and label sub team's preparation, Chuan was sent home.

Looking Ahead

Stay tuned for next week's episode, which promises to get a whole lot sweeter with an exciting chocolate challenge on the horizon!

Next Episode: Mars Attacks | Airs Wednesday, June 26th, 2024 on Fox.
The entrepreneurs are tasked with innovating a new chocolate product by crafting an original name, label and jingle for their creations; Mars Inc. executives Rankin Carrol, Esther Gamble and Sarah Bilson serve as guest judges.
